Garage Door Safety: How to Stay Safe This Summer
Your garage door is a large and heavy piece of movable equipment on your property that, if misused or poorly maintained, can prove a serious health risk to you and your family.
Summer Safety Tips to Prevent Garage Door Injuries
This month’s article will be looking closely at how you can best avoid endangering yourself or your loved ones through poor garage door maintenance this summer and beyond. Read through our safety tips to ensure you and your family have a safe summer:
1) Keep the kids clear of the door
Children are most at risk of injury when it comes to your garage door because they are weaker and smaller than adults. To protect them from danger you need to ensure that they have no access to the door, so keep either your keys or the garage door opener button out of their reach.
The garage door is a heavy piece of equipment, and while your children may find it a fun game to roll underneath it as it’s closing (particularly with automated garage doors), things can go wrong at any time; don’t let your children put themselves at risk for a couple of laughs.
2) Test it regularly
You should make a point of checking over your garage door regularly to ensure that it is working properly. Read through your instruction manual or ask your local technician how you can monitor the condition of your garage door and to find out how you can properly maintain it.
Furthermore, it would be worth scheduling a technician in to assess your garage door annually to wheedle out any technical problems with your door that you may otherwise overlook.
3) Don’t try to fix the door yourself
Following on from our previous tip, you should never try to fix your garage door yourself if you identify a problem with it. The mechanisms at work in your door need specialist attention, and trying to fix them yourself can put you and anybody else with you at the time in danger
For instance, the garage door could come crashing down without any resistance, damaging the door further as well as having the potential to crush a person, or the high tension of the springs could snap and cause serious damage themselves also.
4) If automated, watch it close
If your garage door is automated you should watch it close to ensure that it closes completely and that no one comes near to it as it closes, keeping hands and fingers in particular away from the moving door, as covered in point one.
However, you should also watch the door because if you were to not you could put yourself at risk of burglary should the door not close fully. Safety with your garage door not only comes in the form of protecting yourself and loved ones, but also your property.
5) Educate your family
You can’t be everywhere at once, so it’s of the utmost importance that not only do you keep an eye out where you can but that you also inform your family about the dangers of misusing the garage door. Knowledge is the best weapon in the fight to achieve safety, so don’t overlook it.
