What’s the Best Garage Door for Security?
When choosing a new garage door, one of your prime concerns should be the level of security it can offer, and whether it can prevent break-ins. Old garage doors can have poor security features, be weak and provide poor resistance to intruders and burglars. For this reason, if your garage door is aging or you have concerns about break-ins, you should look for an upgrade.
Best Garage Door for Security
New garage doors provide an improvement on the level of security offered. However, different door styles have their own benefits. In this article, we shall be considering how secure different types of garage door are.
Up & over
Classic up & over doors offer a good level of security these days, so long as you ensure you get the appropriate features. As with many things, the cheapest options aren’t the best quality choice. If you do decide to go for an up & over style door, ensure you choose one with a multi-point locking system and a euro cylinder anti-snap lock. This will ensure that your door won’t be compromised even if thieves attempt to force or drill the lock.
Side-hinged
A side-hinged door is a popular choice which is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. This door can be very useful for garages that generally receive pedestrian access. However, you will need to ensure you have sufficient security features installed to keep it secure. Choosing doors with double skinned steel panels, steel frames and more than one locking mechanism should ensure your side-hinged garage door is as secure as possible.
Roller
Roller doors are one of the most secure garage door options, provided you don’t choose a very basic variant. Automated roller doors are especially secure as they don’t give intruders much leverage or a clear point of entry.
If you decide a roller door is right for you but also want to ensure high security levels, ensure you select a door with high quality side rails, strengthened top and bottom slats, a steadfast locking system and, preferably, one made from double skinned metal.
Sectional
A sectional garage door is a robust choice and is popular for the level of security it provides, whilst also not being as space consuming as alternatives. Like an automated roller door, a sectional door also leaves potential intruders without an obvious target/point of entry. This can be a deterrent in itself and a highly secure option as it combines great lateral strength with a sturdy steel frame and an efficient seal .
Automation
As well as the convenience an automated door provides, boosted security is also a big benefit. An automated door often does away with the need for external locking hardware which can be a focus point for a break-in attempt. The electric door system is also designed to exert a downward force until the remote is pressed which can make a door more resistant to opening than a manual counterpart. So, for an increased element of security, an automated version of your chosen door type is a good idea.
