A Guide to Sealing Your Garage Door

Sometimes, even the best garage doors fail to fully seal the garage opening completely, leaving your garage open to the elements and all manner of materials that may blow in or even pesky, uninvited mice.

In order to combat this, it may be worth investing in and installing garage door seals. This month, we’ll be discussing the seals you can purchase for your garage and the benefits that they have.

Garage Door Seals

The type of seal you’ll need changes depending on the garage door that you have, and later on, we’ll be looking at each type of seal and letting you know where it’ll work best.

Garage Door Seals Save Energy

Save on your energy bills by sealing what, until now, would likely have been one of the most uninsulated areas of your home. The opening in your home that houses your garage door is a massive hole in the building that leaks the warmth inside you are paying to generate. Simply keeping the garage shut alone will not stop the heat from escaping, namely because the edges of the garage are not fully sealed and therefore provide an avenue for warmth to escape.

Sealing your garage door, on the other hand, stops heat from escaping so readily. A well-insulated home works to keep the heat in and means you don’t have to waste extra energy constantly replenishing the warmth in your home.

Garage Door Seals Prevent Flooding

If you’re finding that every time there’s a bit of a downpour your garage floods, it may be because your garage door isn’t properly sealed. The floor may be uneven or the garage door too short to effectively keep water from seeping into your garage space from underneath. A floor seal can help to keep water from pooling in your garage.

Types of Garage Door Seals

The type of garage door you have will change the type of seal that you’ll require, so next we’ll be looking at the types of garage door seals and which one will best help you.

Roller Shutter Seals

Designed for roller garage doors, these types of seals are attached to the underside of your garage door to provide a full seal around the garage opening once the door is closed. This can prevent water, leaves and mice from penetrating your garage.

Floor Threshold Seals

For up-and-over garage doors, a floor threshold seal is better suited to sealing off the garage opening. These seals are affixed to the floor where the base of the garage door meets with the ground. In doing so, possible infiltration of the elements is prevented.

Commercial Floor Threshold Seals

If your garage is part of your commercial premises, you’ll need something with a bit more heft to it to keep Mother Nature away from your goods. A commercial floor threshold seal provides a heavy duty solution that will go above and beyond to keep your garage door fully sealed.

Top Seals

If your garage door fits loosely at the top of the panel then you’ll be letting cold air enter your garage space during the winter and the cooler air out during the summer, both of which could lead to your possessions becoming damaged. A top seal sits along the top ridge of your panel and, when the garage door is shut, serves to prevent airflow between the inside and outside.

Side Seals

Similar to a top seal, a side seal fits onto the side of your garage door panel and prevents airflow into or out of your garage. The two seals, top and side, working in conjunction also serve to make your garage door more secure, deterring potential thieves who will now find it harder to break into your garage.
