5 Common Garage Door Problems

Posted on by JB Garage Door Team

A garage door can be insulating, automated and attractive, but if it doesn’t fulfil its basic function and problems arise, this can be highly frustrating and possibly dangerous. Here at JB Doors, we have put together a list of 5 common garage door problems along with how to deal with the issue, so your door is back up and running again as quickly as possible.

1) Door sticks

A sticking door is a common issue which can be resolved easily. Firstly, the wheel track should be checked for anything which may be obstructing it and preventing the door from opening smoothly. Subsequently, lubricating the wheels and track with an appropriate garage door lubricant can also allow the door to open more seamlessly – this should be done roughly every 6 months to maintain the fix. This symptom can have a more serious cause, however, such as damaged or unaligned tracks. If this seems to be the case, you should contact a garage door specialist for help.

2) Door makes loud noises when moving

Another common and noticeable issue can be that the garage door makes loud grinding or screeching noises when it is moving. Similarly to a sticky garage door, this can often be fixed by cleaning and lubricating the wheels and wheel track of your garage door. This issue can also just be a sign of wear and could mean bolts and screws need to be tightened – our qualified technicians at JB Doors can easily deal with this for you.

3) Remote control doesn’t open door

Although automated garage doors offer benefits of convenience and ease, they can have some unique problems too; the most common of which is that the controller fails to open the door. The most likely issue is simply that the remote has run out of battery power.

Check to see if the wall unit still opens the door and change the batteries in the remote. If this does not solve the problem, there could be issues involving the sensors or cable detachment and it is best to contact a garage door specialist to troubleshoot this for you.

4) Door closes too fast

Perhaps the most dangerous of the problems on this list, a door which falls too quickly has the potential to result in a nasty injury. This issue is likely to be caused by broken or loose cables or springs. This is something you want to get fixed quickly and should definitely leave to qualified professionals, such as those at JB Doors, due to safety issues.

5) Damaged springs

Springs play an important part in the mechanism which allows the movement of your garage door. It is, therefore, of utmost importance that they are in good working condition. If springs become damaged, worn or rusty, this can result in a variety of problems, such as overly heavy closing of the door or uneven door movement. Repairing or replacing springs requires professional know-how and equipment.

We hope that this article will help you identify problems with your garage door. Although these are some common issues, this list is not exhaustive and if you have further problems, it is best to contact a professional.

If you don’t feel confident in identifying and resolving garage door problems yourself or if the issue appears to be complex, please don’t hesitate to contact our experienced garage door specialists at JB Doors. We also carry out garage door servicing which is the most proactive way to maintain your door and prevent problems from getting out of hand!
